Experience the Amazon in comfort and style.

The Ecuadorian amazon is mainly tropical rain forest elevated 400m above sea level.   The Amazon region of Ecuador is one of the few places in the world where its probably best to travel with a group, with a guide or through a jungle lodge.

If you have more than a few days and you’re not a super tight budget, staying and traveling with a jungle lodge can be very rewarding. You’re based right in the midst of the jungle, and, at the better lodges, you’re in an area that’s protected from farming, logging and drilling. You usually have 2-3 activities per day including birding hikes, canoe trips and fishing for piranhas. Again, at some of the better lodges, you usually have a guide that speaks English, French, etc and an indigenous guide. This ensures that you really get to see some amazing things like five different species of monkeys, caimans, tarantulas and lots and lots of birds.

For hard-core birders, most of the lodges offer special sight-seeing activities with much earlier wake-up calls.

Take your Photography to Another Level
Ecuador is one of the truly spectacular places on Earth to see and photograph birds. This very safe country is about the size of Michigan but hosts twice as many bird species as all of North America excluding Mexico. Part of the reason for this rich diversity is the Andes Mountains. Many bird species are found in narrow altitudinal zones, and a good number of them are found only in the western or eastern Andes. During our photo tour we’ll take full advantage by visiting several altitudinal zones on both slopes of the Andes. We’ll stay at comfortable lodges where photo opportunities abound even on lodge verandas and grounds. We’ll walk a variety of easy trails and photograph birds along the sides of country roads. You will likely see and have opportunities to photograph about 40 species of hummingbirds as well as many other bird species such as trogons, barbets, toucans, woodpeckers, antbirds, antpittas, tanagers, and flowerpiercers. A special treat will be the chance to photograph at close range extremely rare antpittas that local guides can lure into the open using conditioning techniques with native caterpillars.
